I do too (live a fearful life)!!! But it's all about breaking through for me. Trust me I'm not on the subway singing and dancing every day, but it's so worthwhile to push myself because it's so amazing to connect with people I never otherwise would. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Loved your subway video. It always amazes me at the attitude and fear of the general public. As an individual, I live a fearful life. Fear someone will take advantage of me, harm me or just downright make me look stupid. It is the culture of fearfulness in our society that keeps us confined to our solitude in public places. Where is the connection from which we come where communities feed each other, raise barns together and meet on a Sunday night for togetherness. We are no longer in the wilderness, duking it out against the wild animals and the elements, which brought our forefathers together, but somehow we've allowed the wilderness to remain inside, locked away to fight alone in solitude. It's a sad day when you can't give away money on a NY Subway line. Oh the irony!

I think it's all about what's normal. Handing out newspapers has become normal. I remember the first time someone handed me a free newspaper walking into a subway I didn't take it. Inside the closed doors of a subway is a really unique environment -- normal there is staying to oneself, reading or listening to music, not talking. I am as guilty as the next person much of the time. Yes, I'm sure I could continue improving my strategy, but I also think that there is something fundamental culturally going on in NYC subways ... something that would be awesome to shift.

dope video man. i've always thought the subways were a perfect place for social psych experiments.

question: i gotta imagine if you were on the sidewalk, or even on the other end of the turnstiles next to the people handing out AM New York, people would take whatever it was that you were handing out. what do you think it is about being in motion in the bowels and arteries of the NY commute that make people less inclined to touch what you've got? do you think things would change if you dropped the shpeil beforehand?

Thank you! I agree that our subway culture in NYC is basically opposite to the core values that many of let shine through in other settings -- we've all just come to accept this is the way it is... the question is: how do we create a culture shift that resonates through every subway car?

This is wonderful. I don't take the subway but I live in Jamaica and take public transportation everyday. If you get in a taxi without saying good morning you are considered very rude, however, it seems if you do that in NYC maybe you are crazy? I hope this idea spreads.

Keep spreading the love :)
